i am working on some music by erik satie at the moment. do you know of any other composers that write music in the same style?
There are no comments, leave a comment.
debussy and ravel are the obvious names that spring to mind although he also had a strong influence on some of the later composers such as poulenc and milhaud.

he was a pretty eccentric guy.  he had a collection of over 100 umbrellas and would only eat white food.  he also composed the longest piece ever written called 'vexations'.  it is only 180 notes but is supposed to be repeated 840 times.  it took a relay team of 10 pianists over 18 hours to perform it when they recorded it in the 1960's!
wasn't satie a member of "les six" -- which included poulenc, milhaud, and (4?) others?  i never "got" satie, except for the great amount of press his experiments got from people like fluxus in the 1960s.

i like  that little opera poulenc composed -- i can't remember the title, but it's the one with a good bit of telephone dialogue in it.
some of the simpler stuff by faure has a satie-like feel.  the dolly suite, for example.

why not try to compose your own pieces in the satie style?  writing a new piece based on a new style, melodic idea or harmonic motif can be a good way of extending the jazz improvisation toolkit.

incidentally, there's more to barry's story about vexations.  by the end of the first performance the audience had dwindled to just two people - a masochist, and a sado-masochist who leapt up and cried "encore".

excellent sid!
good one.
sid's extension to the story sounds similar to one of my gigs :-)
