i was wondering if anyone's ever heard of a mac and pc compatible computer program that could take the notes that one played on their keyboard, and print them as sheet music, allowing one to print or view what he or she just played? i think this would do this through a midi interface, but i'm not sure.  i apologize if theres already been a thread like this.

thanks, king cat

finale can do this. i remember recording my first ever midis using finale, and looking at all the garbage it printed up.

the problem is, the timing will not show up how you want it to. if you dont play with a metranome, it will be impossible to read.
i asked a similar question a few months ago, and received some excellent advice.  my question had more to do with importing midi files to notation software/sequencers and changing the bar alignment/granularity, but it's really the same principle at work.  even though it's not a very good notation program when compared to real software, like various versions of the sibelius core, the pay-to-play versions of finale can accept midi input, but i can't recall the specific details -- i'm pretty sure finale notepad (the freeware version) won't handle your midi data in the way you want.
i've used sonar, band in a box and sibelius to do this via midi. as billy says, you must record against a metronome otherwise the result will be very hard to read back.

band in a box has the advantage over a metronome click in that creates a nice backing band for your input.
the upgrade to finale notepad that interprets midi input is called finale notepad plus and costs around $30 (or did in 2003 when i got the upgrade.)  i assume they still have the equivalent for their newer releases.  control over the conversion process (at least in the version i have) is virtually non-existant.  a better program with more control features for interpreting midi that has not been mentioned is noteworthy composer (from www.noteworthysoftware.com).  it costs a bit more ($39 i think) but they have a 30 day evaluation version (that won't print as nicely as the paid version but works well enough for comparison purposes.)

as everyone has noted midi to sheet music program has problems with "real world" timing.
mac people often use logic or the more affordable logic express.
