all singers are vocalists---but all vocalists are not "singers"

i was blessed with a good set of pipes but i knew that alone would not make me a singer---vocalist---yes---

ella was a singer, billie holliday, sinatra, nancy wilson, sarah vaughn and so many greats

joe cocker is a singer and he sure doesn't have a fab set of pipes but he is a singer, because he has soul, he feels what he's singing

and makes us feel what he is feeling---that is a singer.

a vocalist--- there are a lot of them and a lot more that wouldn't even qualify as a vocalist(they think differently, no doubt) so being a vocalist isn't a bad thing, for sure. they sing pleasantly, have a nice sound, come in predictably on the downbeat and basically do everything right----but "magic"---uh uh!!

you know what i mean---

i love to be in a studio with someone who sings and hears something maybe for the first time that tells they they have the soul of a singer and that they are or can become "a singer"---what a thrill--i remember the first time i felt that and so i love it when someone else get's to experience that wonderful moment.

if you know you got the goods--you feel the groove, not just with the one on one with the song and phrasing that is uniquely your own, but also love the musicians you are singing with---and want that synergism---and then--- boy, when the audience feels it ---
you are a singer and i'd love to hear  ya!!!

singers are needed badly----we got way too many vocalists and way too many who sound so "god awful" and actually have the nerve to indulge their dillusions at our ear's expense----

you don't have to sing "pretty"---but if you got that soul and the audience tells you by their applause---that they like what you do---
if you can sing with "abandon"---it's like great sex--ain't all that different---free to show who you are and express it and love  what you are doin'

you are a singer---let's hear ya
