return of the insomniac......
beverly, thanks so much for your kind reply and my appologies for taking 5 months to check back in. at least i had the good sense to bookmark the site.
your words are inspiring and fearlessly honest and i'm sure many more appreciate them than reply.
singing, like all music, is communication. the best singers speak to our hearts and as listeners we seek out the ones who tell the stories we want or need to hear at any given moment in our lives.
musicians, including singers can speak to us without words, touching our souls with tone, melody and emotion. that is why language is no barrier when it comes to music. songwirters touch us with melody and lyrics but the singer's heart and soul can transport us, whether or not  we understand the language. when the singer is the lyricist/composer there is a whole other element present.
i've been writing music and lyrics for over 30 years with no real commercial reward but i have learned that more money than i really need holds very little value in my life and what i get from writing and singing and playing music can't be bought for any price.
i do have to take issue with you on the subject of vocal coach. over the years i have studied with several people and the one who helped me the most was not a singer. at a time when i was experiencing a great deal of pain in my throat, after seeing several ent specialists who gave me no help at all he virtually cured my condition.
his approach to singing is technical. i never sang one song in his studio in the 5 or so years that i studied with him but he did more for my singing than anyone else before or after that time and i will be eternally gratefull to him.
i guess what i'm saying is that it really depends on what you need from a vocal coach. i wasn't looking for help with style or interpretation or repetoire development, i desperately needed help with the way i used my voice and he got right to the source of my pain and eliminated it. his lasting gift to me is endurance and longevity.
i hope you will continue to post your thoughts here and that many more singer/musicians will join it and i will make a point of visiting on a regular basis to see what you all have to say.
