vocalchords,

yes, i am sure there are some that are not performers, singers, who have the ability to help the "natural instrument"

obviously true, because you were helped by someone like that---and i am so glad you got the help  you were seeking.

i have been a spoiled lady and never dealt with the "underbelly" of those "so very frustrated" until after my husband died---but i got a crash course in "never trust anyone desperate" and it is  indeed true.

i made the mistake of agreeing to vocal coach someone against my criteria---

i only coach those who already are good singers and may want my breathing techniques or how to find their own unique way of phrasing or performing  dynamics that can be brought out so they can be "free" on stage----

if they don't sing well---i don't wanna coach them.

at any rate, i felt so sorry for this individual that i agreed to coach them as they said they had no money and they had gone through some surgery---and looked so very "pitiful"

a big mistake for me to have crossed my own critera--line

usually people who make us feel that sorry for them---have spent enough time feeling sorry for themselves. the whiners and sympathy suckers.

at any rate they--- came to my home, picked my brains for breathing techniques and now are calling themselves "vocal coach"--teacher"----horrors!!!

when this person came to my home i had no idea they were on antidepressants and at the second session and the last one---- they had taken too much medication or whatever----

they stumbled over my furniture and i had to break their fall.they almost killed themselves backing out of my driveway in their car-- and would have backed into a family that was driving on the my street---if i hadn't yelled "stop"

my point is that desperate people will do desperate things and sometimes they will say they are a vocal coach or teacher or whatever.

they are emotionally unstable---not to mention---"frustrated" because their singing voice--if they ever had one---is no longer there in a way that anyone would want to listen.

while i do agree with you that there are probably those who are excellent coaches---who are not singers, performers, etc.

if i wanted to learn mechanics, i'd go to an expert mechanic. if i wanted to be a good pianist, i'd go to the one who could play the piano best---and so on and so on----

and so i'll close with saying -----this experience frightened me that those who are "desperate" will tamper with what i love most in this world " the natural human vocal instrument" and possibly destroy it.
maybe their voice got destroyed--- by a person-----just like themselves.

those who have coached with me were already good singers---but they are doing much better because of my coaching them. i consider it a "sacred" commitment.

it is usually through a live performance of mine that i am approached to coach.

i never want to do it on a large basis.

but it is my "singing" that makes them want to coach with me. makes sense to me.

i have only one sacred in my life. it is the "art" the music---the holding "sacred" the gifts of another artist as well and i won't break that---

even if i don't like the behaviour of another artist---i will never say anything but compliments regarding their gifts, if i once admired them----for to downgrade another fine artist's work, for any reason would set karma in action in ways i don't want---i don't tamper there-----

i'm know what i'm good at---and what i am not---i let others do--- and don't go there---

some people just want to make a buck and have "authority" for things they know nothing about and have no scruples except what suits their self indulgence for money or some "faux power"---- of the "moment"

so then, vocalchords, we are in agreement---audition your coach, teachers, etc.

-----check what they have done----anyone can make up-----anything!!!

---even though i admit i may be wrong---i won't listen to anyone about singing who can't do it better than i can.

hey, i'm a crazy lady, stubborn, opinionated---but i do love singers if they can sing good---

i'm their best fan and supporter.

perception---perhaps the greatest gift of all---to know what you can do well

and what should be left to do---by someone who can do it better than you can----

integrity is a word---not used often----but i won't have anything less in my musical life---in myself---or others

i hope none of you will either.

hey vocalchords, nothing better than questioning, listening---being willing to change your opinion if a nanosecond if the "light comes on"and you see things differently

i'm just coming from a place of  concern for the wonderful upcoming singers that can be----thrilling----and i wanna hear them and i don't want a "wannabee" to ruin their chances because they have no options in their own lives left--

they should have accepted the fact that they were not good enough and----done something else with their life besides tampering and harming and controlling---- those who are good enough----

makes me angry and---- righteous anger----after all---we know of situations--- political, musical and otherwise----where more people should have spoken their convictions.

when i was a little girl my dad said to me---"you are so outspoken, there are some things that are better left unsaid"---and i replied "yes,  daddy, i'm sure that is true---- but they will never be left unsaid---by me" i got the biggist hug of my life from him for that line. !
