'Someday My Prince Will Come' Solo Piano
his solo playing is some of the hardest for me to decipher, so if anyone has any experience with the techniques he used when playing solo, and would share what they've learned, i would greatly appreciate that as well.

since a few weeks, i am the new piano player in a jazz orchestra. as i have little experience in playing jazz in a combo (which is, of course, very different from improvising on my own) and no experience whatsoever in playing in a big band, i was wondering whether there was anyone who could give me some tips.
the repertoire goes from older arrangements to more modern work. to give a few examples: sammy nestico (basie), horace silver, thad jones, and some work by modern composers, such as bert joris (belgian composer).
could anyone give me some general hints on exactly how playing the piano in a big band should differ from playing in a smaller combo?
for instance, when playing a piece in which a different chord is written on each and every beat, it shouldn't be necessary to play each chord (as the guitar player does). this would make my comping too heavy, i'm sure. what, then, will be a good approach? how do i choose between playing the chord on the first beat, or the one on the second beat?
are there any tips on how to comp behind a bigger group of musicians?

Volume 2 has 14 jazz piano exercises and tricks of the trade, and quite a bit of it is Calypso jazz piano related material, including some Monty Alexander and Michel Camilo style grooves. Jazz piano education is through the ears, but books like this can help.
Volume 3 contains 12 jazz piano exercises and explorations by the acclaimed jazz piano educator, pianist, author, and recording artist Tim Richards.
Tim wrote the well known "Exploring Jazz Piano" and "Improvising Blues Piano" books and has several others to his name.
Volume 4 is by Jeff Brent, a jazz pianist, composer, teacher, and author of "Modalogy" and other acclaimed jazz theory and education books. In this book Jeff shares detailed analysis of transcriptions of live performances. He covers everything from the shape of the songs to the tricks and licks he uses in improvised lines to the ideas behind his lush chord voicings.
