i've been a live singer/entertainer for literally all of my life

i'm getting ready to fly---so i like writing this today----

i never stopped to analyze the relationship of a singer and their audience---

the way i never stopped to analyze the four and one half octave range i've had since a baby---

but because i wanted to share with others---i began to analyze both--

here's my "take"---

i just write fast and never think it out--i'm thinking it out----with you.

i found this note or poem that i wrote after a road tour when i was exausted. it said--

i am like a fine wine
sampled at your leisure
tasted, sipped and washed away
i know i brought you pleasure

i see the audience and i as "lovers"

they are passive---i ---agressive
not taking advantage of their vulnerability--oh no---
only the weak---do that
they are safe with me-- that is,unless my sadistic streak gets "tweaked"---that's been known to happen---to be the leader---your perception must be "rocket ship" high!

mine is-is yours???

if a singer in the spotlight doesn't have it--why should they be in the spotlight---they shouldn't.

are you a good "lover" to your audience?

taking them to places in their emotions they didn't ever know that had?

can you sense when to take them to a "valley"---when to a "peak"?

the audience is looking for a "lover"---they need you to be  the best
they ever had---

they are always "hot"to be led--and yet, one shouldn't be unaware of the collective energy that is "them"---it's that one on one that not only "gets it for them"---- but for "you"--- gotta hit the mark---- gotta!!!!----

the fun comes in the "playing"---in lulling them into almost boredom with some throw away song---it's the "hitchcock theory"----nothing much happening and then----bang---surprise---shock---thrill---and they are on their feet screaming for more---but you don't give it all away----not really----ever----you tickle them, tease them, please them and draw them back from pleasure---til you are ready--- it's your call all the  way.

every vocal and musical lick meant to drive them wild.

even if you are doing a sad, plaintive ballad----the patter afterward should bring them to laughter after their tears---

you gotta know how to do "set ups"---especially if you are in charge

--and want them to listen to a bass solo or another singer--

i go ballistic when the "set ups" are "weak

they aren't--- if i'm doing them----

it's that wanting, that only you can fill-- that makes you worthy of

being their lover for the night---of being in control.

when i hit the power button---i always draw it back a little--must.

ah,perception---the greatest gift---can't be taught--you got it or

you dont---there is no "middle"---no room for shyness or lack of

expertise---sure it's spontaneous----but you "have them"---they

don't "have you"

would you pay someone to be a boring lover---??

we don't like to think we are hookers--but let's face it---

why the price of admission??? common sense---

because they can't get what we know how to give--- anywhere else.

have you got the goods to be a good lover----do you feel that sensual

power rush---if you don't feel it----ever---when you perform

please don't pick up the microphone til you can rev up your engine--

nothing worse than a "bland, insecure, lover" in the top position

especially if there is a cover charge.

bev.
