one way is to treat it as an 8 with the 8 chopped off. john mcglaughlin used this technique on a blues progression back in the mahavishnu days. it produces a kind of "jumped" feel.

the other obvious ways are to treat it as 3+4 or 4+3.
a very common way to feel 7/8 time is this rhythm:

quarter note - quarter note - dotted eighth note - dotted eighth note

that way it feels almost as natural as 4/4. brad mehldau has recorded a number of standards with that feel, for example it might as well be spring and alone together.
ya just gotta do it.  it's only unnatural because your not used to it.

one thing is to tap along and be aware that your foot will tap the downbeat every other measure...
i think that if playing in seven starts feeling normal, you should begin to worry.
then try something like hiromi's "spiral" or "first circle" by pat metheny. when these feel natural, you're in real trouble !
