---------------This book was recommended by Kenny Werner in his book "Effortless Mastery" I highly recommend it too! It is a quick read with only about 100 pages including the forward. (although I recommend taking a little time with each chapter) To me it reads like a series of short essays, each devoted to specific topics ranging from attitude to practice techniques to performance anxiety, etc, emphasizing relaxation as a means to release the natural musician in us. A very economical, to the point writing style. I originally found the book at a chain bookstore for around $100, but later found it on Amazon for $6.50 (it's out of print)

i did that with two hard to find monty cds two years ago. amazon rocks, they give you stuff for free.

funny story while i'm here. i mp3'ed the cd from kenny werner's book, and gave to my wife on her portable player. she's been listening to it every single day for almost a year.
just last week she explained that it does something weird, where she's in some sort of weird relaxed space ...
she doesn't play, but she writes a lot, so she replaces the words "how easy to is to play" by "how easy it is to write"
she says when she's in the space, she cannot function...
she said it takes a couple minutes to get in the space, and she was able to do it after 3 months or so.... something i must explore, so far, it's only manage to put me to sleep.

Volume 1 of this educational jazz piano book contains 15 jazz piano exercises, tricks, and other interesting jazz piano techniques, voicings, grooves, and ideas Scot Ranney enjoys playing.

Volume 2 has 14 jazz piano exercises and tricks of the trade, and quite a bit of it is Calypso jazz piano related material, including some Monty Alexander and Michel Camilo style grooves. Jazz piano education is through the ears, but books like this can help.
Volume 3 contains 12 jazz piano exercises and explorations by the acclaimed jazz piano educator, pianist, author, and recording artist Tim Richards.
Tim wrote the well known "Exploring Jazz Piano" and "Improvising Blues Piano" books and has several others to his name.
Volume 4 is by Jeff Brent, a jazz pianist, composer, teacher, and author of "Modalogy" and other acclaimed jazz theory and education books. In this book Jeff shares detailed analysis of transcriptions of live performances. He covers everything from the shape of the songs to the tricks and licks he uses in improvised lines to the ideas behind his lush chord voicings.
