any strategies or tips for acquiring this technique.

i've been stuck on this for a little while now. the only method i've come up with is to briefly go up or down a half or whole step (minor chord) soloing in the major scale of the corresponding minor third.

i haven't had much luck trying to pick up things from listening as it all happens too rapidly.  

has anyone else gone through this roadblock?

in my opinion, before one solo out he should solo in well with acceptable results. there are several methods/books on the market witch deal with the subject. try these books:

- a chromatic approach to jazz harmony and melody
- beyond functional harmony  
- inside/outside - a shortcut to jazz improvisation
my mom was always telling me to go play outside, so i got pretty good at it. one approach is to base your solo on the diminished scale instead of a diatonic.
play briefly in a different key, typically a tritone away or up a half step. thoise are fairly "out". then bring it back in. chromatic passing nmotes also add some "outness".
open the door and walk outside to the sandpit and start playing.
