hey.

since listening is a keycomponent in learning to play music, i´m nog looking for versions of tunes that are played in the 240-320 bpm range. the idea is to compose a playlist with only hightempo tunes to really absorb the phrasing. please, if you know any versions with these tempos, reply to this thread.

miles' four and more and atomic basie were both recommended to me for just this purpose.
check out charlie parker recordings with bud powell on the piano.

red garland's soloing in up-tempo 16th notes on tune up from the miles album 'cookin' is pretty impressive.

the fastest track i know is victor feldman's recording of dizzy's bebop (on 'the arrival of victor feldman' -ojc) - approaching 400bpm!!! although a great pianist (he played with miles and cannonball) he is on vibes on this track.

and talking about bud powell - you must know 'the amazing bud powell' trio recordings on blue note?
also, bud was in his "insane" speed period on verve sides like "tea for two."
mccoy tyners "inception" is also impressive. not the 'fastest gun in the west' but aggressive and pure.
one of the best "up" solos to take a look at is keith jarrett on an 60's blakey album called,"buttercorn lady"..this was issued on solid state..the tune is "secret love",i think it's been transcribed........some current players are pretty amazing technically and focus on this, recording at least one "way-up tempo" on their cd's each time, dave kikoski is one, also joey calderazzo...maybe the ljp readership as a whole will help w/other contemporary names..also scot's favorite-monty alexander is that kind of player, check him out..........
