last night, the jazz piano world lost one of its most original and personal voices. claude sifferlen, who had battled cancer for many years, passed away at his home in indianapolis last night.

claude was an incredibly unique player with a stirringly personal style, and an ingenius mastery of harmony. he possessed a unique style and was constantly inventing.

even as great a player as he was, one of the greatest impressions he left on me was his wonderful personality. he was kind, warm, always humble and noble. he always played incredibly, even up to the very end. for as many lessons he taught me musically through his playing, he taught me incredible personal ones through the kindness and grace through which he always led his life.

claude was a pianists' pianist, and although he has had many admirers, including the great chick corea, he is criminally underrated and not widely enough heard. i would like to share with all lovers of jazz piano some of his recordings, so that more people could be familiar with his excellent and unique playing.

from this website, last.fm, you can stream the tracks from an excellent duo recording with the great clarinetist frank glover, with whom claude played duo with for 25 years. no creation of an account is necessary, just click the play icons!

i particularly recommend all the things you are, mr. smith, vonetta, and countdown, but all are incredible. it's one of the best duo recordings i've ever heard.

i hope you enjoy, and please keep his family in your thoughts on this day. thank you.
